Monday Night Beer Fights - Week 4

February 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Another fine week of beer fights in the books. This week saw 17 contestants, and it took 12 rounds to find this weeks champion.

Congratulations to Josh Schmitt, Smithton, IL, who joins the leader board as week four’s Monday Night Beer Fight winner.

After 12 weekly winners are crowned (with a nice prize each week) there will be a tournament of champions that Luis will challenge his taste buds against the others in a fight for a Cardinals game trip in a suite.

Thanks to all of this week’s participants.

Come on out and see if you can bring home the bragging rights of the best beer taster around!

Great turnout this week for the beer fights. This week saw 24 contestants going 10 rounds and some new beer matchups.

Congratulations to Luis Bowman of St. Peter’s who joins the leader board as week three’s Monday Night Beer Fight winner. After the weeks fight, Luis was awarded an extra test, one between Bud Light and Miller Lite, and in true champion fashion, picked the correct beer on stage (which after some of the test of the night, Bud Light vs. Miller Lite is not as easy as you may think.)

After 12 weekly winners are crowned (with a nice prize each week) there will be a tournament of champions that Luis will challenge his taste buds against the others in a fight for a Cardinals game trip in a suite (more to come about the Grand Prize).

Despite the weather, we had another great Monday Night Beer Fight. Check out the pictures below.

The week’s contest saw eight contestants, with the winner and runner-up going eight rounds. There were some tough combinations this week as Tony from O’Fallon Brewery and Mike from Bottom’s Up Brewhouse are working to test the challengers. They work hard to not only match the colors but also the flavors.

Congratulations to this week’s winner Bryan Zimmerman of O’Fallon. He joins last week’s winner (Scott Snyder) at a seat in the Championship round of Monday Night Beer Fights held after 12 weeks of Monday Night Beer Fights.

Join us next week for another Beer Fight! Bring your friends and challenge each other for bragging rights, or just come to taste some beer and enjoy the competition.

The first week of the Monday Night Beer Fights went very well. This was the first of 12 weeks of a unique beer tasting competition. Here’s how it works.

To start the game you get two coasters. Each time you have a “miss”, you lose one coaster. Each round consists of two shots of two different beers. You have to guess which beer is requested by the judge. If you get it right, you move to the next round, and a miss you move on until you are out of coasters.

For example: Round 1 last night was Busch and Heineken. We were asked to select which one was Heineken. Most would say this is relatively easy to distinguish. The choices did get progressively harder with a few “softballs” in there.

Our first week saw eight contestants and 12 rounds to come up with our first winner: Scott Snyder of O’Fallon. To the victor went a nice shirt and hat from local beer provider, O’Fallon Brewery. On top of the physical gifts, Scott also gets an entry into our Monday Night Beer Fight Championship at the end of twelve weeks. The winners of each round will compete for a Grand Prize to be announced later.

The Head Judge for the evening was none other than the owner of O’Fallon Brewery and brewmaster Tony Caradonna. Tony has multiple beers available at Bottom’s Up Brewhouse. While the Brewery has been in business since 2000, you can tell Tony’s love of beer and beer experiance (exBEERiance if you will!) run much deeper than that. Please check out his website for more information on their fine local brew.

Does anyone really need beer tasting tips?

Beer tasting…. sounds more like an art than a science. And we all could consider ourselves Picassos when it comes to beer tasting. But there truly are things to consider when tasting beer. Considering the big beer makers employ professional beer taste testers for the ultimate check before batches of brew are sent to their anxious customers, we think there are a few things that you might want to be aware of when enjoying your local favorite.

Appearance
Aroma
Mouthfeel
Flavor
Aftertaste

About 4000 years ago, it was the accepted practice in Babylonia that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and because their calender was lunar based, this period was called the “honey month” or what we know to day as the “Honey moon.”
